Former spanish colony, Costa Rica gained its independancy in 1821. The constitution of 1949 has abloished the army, and gave place to a paramilitary Civil Guard, in charge with security and order.
The Costa Rican roundel is based upon the colours of the national flag, and sports the inscription Ministerio de Seguridad Publica - Seccion Aerea. It is not often seen on the aircraft of the Seccion Aerea de la Guardia Civil Costariquense.
