Lithuania declared its independence on 11th March 1990, but it was not recognized by USSR, whose forces then invaded Vilnius, the capital . The break-up of the USSR, in 1991, eased the way to a referendum in favoour of independency, and the adoption of a new constitution on 13th October 1992.
